Does Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island Cover Acupuncture?

If you have Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI), you may already have acupuncture benefits. Whether you're covered depends on the specific plan you have, so the quickest way to know is to check. Ocean Ki Wellness is in-network with BCBSRI at both our Warwick and Middletown locations, and we'll check your coverage for free before your first visit.

The Short Answer

Often yes, but it depends on your plan. BCBSRI doesn't include acupuncture as a standard benefit on every commercial plan. Instead, Rhode Island law requires insurers to offer acupuncture as an optional add-on (called a rider) for group plans, and each employer decides whether to include it. Medicare Advantage plans follow different rules, which we cover below.

BCBSRI Employer and Commercial Plans

  • Acupuncture is covered when your employer's plan includes the acupuncture benefit.

  • Care must come from a licensed doctor of acupuncture (D.Ac.) or a qualified, Rhode Island-licensed MD or DO.

  • An initial evaluation is included for new patients.

  • Self-funded employer plans don't always follow the state rule, so their coverage can differ.

Your benefit booklet or Evidence of Coverage lists your yearly visit limit, copay and deductible.

BCBSRI Medicare Advantage Plans

For individual BCBSRI Medicare Advantage plans, acupuncture is covered for chronic low back pain, up to 20 visits per year. Chronic low back pain here means pain lasting 12 weeks or longer with no identifiable systemic cause, and not related to surgery or pregnancy. As of January 1, 2026, acupuncture for other conditions is no longer covered under individual Medicare Advantage plans.

What Usually Isn't Covered

Even when acupuncture is covered, BCBSRI's policies list some services as not covered, including herbs, moxibustion, Oriental massage, and acupuncture with electrical stimulation for conditions other than low back pain. If you'd like to add any of these to your visit, we'll explain the out-of-pocket cost up front.

How to Check Your Coverage in 3 Steps

  1. Look for "acupuncture" in your benefits booklet or BCBSRI member portal.

  2. Call the member services number on the back of your BCBSRI card and ask the questions below.

  3. Or skip the phone call: request a free benefits check from Ocean Ki and we'll find out for you.

Questions to Ask BCBSRI

  • Is acupuncture covered on my plan?

  • How many acupuncture visits do I get per year?

  • What is my copay or coinsurance, and does my deductible apply?

  • Do I need a referral?
