The Best Heating Pad for Back Pain: Moist Heat vs. Dry Heat

2 min read

A heating pad is one of the simplest tools for an aching back, and one of the most common things our patients ask about. But not all heat is the same. The type of heating pad you choose, and how you use it, makes a real difference in how much relief you feel.

Why heat helps a tight back

Most everyday back pain comes from tight, overworked muscles. Heat increases blood flow to the area, helps muscles relax and makes it easier to move. Research on low back pain has found that heat wraps can reduce pain and stiffness in the first days of a flare, especially when combined with gentle movement.

Moist heat vs. dry heat

  • Moist heat (pads that draw moisture from the air, or ones you dampen) tends to reach tight muscles more deeply and feels less drying on the skin. This is our first pick for back pain and menstrual cramps.

  • Dry heat (most standard electric pads) is convenient and easy to use anywhere. It works well too, but some people find it dries the skin and feels more on the surface.

What to look for in a heating pad

  • An extra-large size that covers your whole low or mid back

  • An automatic shut-off so you never fall asleep on it

  • Several heat settings so you can start low

  • A washable cover

You can see the moist heat pads Dr. Jen recommends on our At-Home Picks page, or see Dr. Jen's pick on Amazon.

How to use it safely

  • Use it for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, on low or medium.

  • Always keep a layer of fabric between the pad and your skin.

  • Never sleep on a heating pad.

  • Skip heat on a fresh injury, swelling or anything that feels hot already. Ice is usually better for the first 48 hours.

  • Ask your doctor first if you have diabetes, neuropathy or reduced feeling in your skin, since you may not notice a burn.

When to see someone

See a provider if back pain follows a fall or accident, travels down your leg, comes with numbness or weakness, or does not improve after a couple of weeks. Acupuncture is one of the treatments recommended for low back pain by the American College of Physicians, and many of our patients pair it with heat at home between visits.
