How to Use a Castor Oil Pack, Step by Step
Castor oil packs have been used in traditional home care for generations, and they are having a big moment online. Many of our patients use them as a calming evening ritual for bloating, menstrual discomfort and general relaxation. Here is how to do it simply and safely.
What a castor oil pack is
A castor oil pack is a piece of soft flannel or cotton soaked in castor oil, laid on the skin and usually covered with gentle heat. Scientific research on castor oil packs is limited, so think of it as a soothing self-care practice rather than a treatment for a medical condition. The warmth and the 30 to 45 minutes of quiet rest are a big part of why people love it.
What you need
Cold-pressed, hexane-free castor oil in a glass bottle
A reusable flannel or organic cotton pack (many kits include a wrap that ties around your body)
An old towel and a layer of plastic or a pack liner so oil does not stain
A heating pad or hot water bottle (optional)

Step by step
Do a patch test first: rub a little castor oil on your inner arm and wait 24 hours.
Lie down on an old towel. Most people place the pack over the lower belly or the right side of the upper abdomen.
Pour enough oil onto the flannel to make it damp but not dripping.
Place the pack on your skin, cover it with the liner or plastic, then add warmth on low if you like.
Rest for 30 to 45 minutes. Read, breathe slowly or just relax.
Wipe off the oil with a warm cloth. Store the pack in a sealed container in the fridge and reuse it for several weeks, adding a little oil each time.
Who should skip it
Anyone who is pregnant or trying to conceive (castor oil can stimulate the uterus)
During your period, if you have heavy bleeding
Over broken or irritated skin
If you have a known allergy to castor oil
Never take castor oil by mouth unless your doctor tells you to. If you are using a pack for ongoing pain, bloating or irregular cycles, talk with your provider so the cause is checked.
How it fits with acupuncture
In Chinese medicine, warmth over the lower belly is a traditional way to support digestion and the menstrual cycle. Our practitioners can suggest how often to use a pack alongside your treatment plan. For more on digestion, read supplements for bloating.
