Supplements for Hormone Balance in Your 40s and Beyond
Updated: 54 minutes ago
"Hormone balance" is a phrase you see on a lot of supplement labels. For most women who search for it, what they really mean is: why do I feel so different in my 40s, and what can help? Hot flashes, night sweats, irregular periods, poor sleep, mood swings and brain fog are often signs of perimenopause, the years before your final period when estrogen and progesterone rise and fall unpredictably.
What supplements can and cannot do
No supplement replaces your hormones, and none can stop perimenopause. What the right supplements can do is support your body through the change, especially sleep, mood and bone health. For moderate to severe symptoms, hormone therapy is an effective option worth discussing with your doctor or gynecologist.
Supplements with research behind them
Magnesium. Supports sleep, muscle relaxation and a calmer mood, three things that often slip during perimenopause.
Vitamin D with K2. Bone loss speeds up as estrogen drops. Vitamin D helps you absorb calcium, and vitamin K2 helps direct calcium into bone.
Hot flash blends. Some formulas use plant extracts and nutrients that have shown modest help with hot flashes in studies. Results vary from person to person, so give them six to eight weeks.
Omega-3s. May help with mood and heart health, which matter more after menopause.
Check with your doctor before taking hormone-related supplements if you have a history of breast cancer, blood clots or liver disease, take hormone therapy or birth control, or are on thyroid, blood pressure or blood thinning medicine.
When to see your doctor
See your doctor about very heavy bleeding, bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, or any bleeding after you have gone 12 months without a period. Ask about a bone density scan and heart health screening as you approach menopause.
Shop the Perimenopause Support plan
In the Ocean Ki Wellness Shop, Dr. Jen Jackson, DACM, built the Perimenopause Support plan with Thorne Perimenopause Complete, Vitamin D + K2 Liquid and Magnesium Glycinate. Choose "Perimenopause changes" on the shop page to see how to take each one, or get the Perimenopause Support plan from Dr. Jen's Thorne store. Past menopause? Look for the "Menopause and beyond" plan instead.
Lifestyle steps that help
Lift weights or do resistance training two to three times a week for bones and muscle.
Keep the bedroom cool and dress in layers for night sweats.
Cut back on alcohol and late caffeine, which can trigger hot flashes and poor sleep.
Eat plenty of protein, fiber and plant foods.
How acupuncture helps
Acupuncture is a gentle, drug-free option many women use for hot flashes, sleep and mood during perimenopause. Read more in Perimenopause & Menopause: What's Really Happening in Your Body.
