Veterans have the right to choose trusted community providers for their health care—including acupuncture. Through the VA MISSION Act and the Veterans Community Care Program (VCCP), eligible Veterans can receive insurance-covered acupuncture at Ocean Ki Wellness, without needing to rely solely on VA facilities.
This guide explains the step-by-step process, your rights to choose, and how acupuncture can support Veterans from different service backgrounds.
🇺🇸 Step-by-Step: How to Get Authorized for Acupuncture
1. Meet with your VA Doctor Schedule an appointment with your VA primary care provider to discuss your condition and the symptoms you’d like acupuncture to address. Examples include chronic pain, PTSD, migraines, musculoskeletal injuries, or recovery support.
2. Request Acupuncture Care Let your VA doctor know that you are interested in acupuncture as part of your care plan. Be clear about your goals pain relief, improved function, stress reduction, or specific recovery needs.
3. Specify Your Preference for Ocean Ki Acupuncture You have the right to request a community provider. Voice that you would like to receive acupuncture at Ocean Ki Acupuncture, conveniently located in Middletown and Warwick, Rhode Island.
💡 Per the MISSION Act, avoid naming a specific clinic too early in the request focus on your reasons for needing community care first (e.g., closer location, ineffective VA treatments, long wait times).
4. Receive Your First Authorization Once approved, your first authorization typically includes:
12 visits within 60 days
5. Continue Your CareBefore you use all your visits (around 2–3 sessions remaining), Ocean Ki Wellness will submit a request for more treatments. We also encourage you to follow up with your MD to support the continuation.
Subsequent authorizations usually cover:
2nd Authorization: 8 visits within 90 days
3rd and Beyond: 8 visits within 180 days
Know Your Rights Under the VA MISSION Act
The VA MISSION Act (effective June 6, 2019) expands Veterans’ access to community care, giving you the power to choose providers outside the VA system if it’s in your best medical interest.
You may be eligible for community care if:
The needed service is not available at VA
You live too far from a VA facility (drive time over 30 min for primary or 60 min for specialty care)
Appointment wait times exceed 20 days (primary) or 28 days (specialty)
You experience poor outcomes or unsatisfactory care at the VA
Important: Community care must be formally authorized by VA before appointments to ensure coverage.
Why Veterans Choose Community Care
Closer to home — less travel stress
Faster access — shorter wait times
Personalized wellness — integrative, whole-person care not always offered through VA
Expanded treatment options — like acupuncture, cupping, and holistic therapies
